How To Maintain Hair Colour Vibrancy Longer: 6 Tips For Lasting Shine | Lifestyle News

Last Updated:

Coloured hair is a perfect way to amp up your look. However, maintaining its vibrancy often needs patience. Here are simple ways to make your coloured hair last longer.

Use colour-safe, sulfate-free shampoo to prevent hair colour from fading.

Freshly coloured hair looks vibrant, glossy, and full of life. But keeping that salon-fresh look can be a challenge. Whether you’ve gone bold with fashion hues or opted for a more natural tone, maintaining hair colour vibrancy requires a specific routine.

Here are six expert-approved tips that will make your hair colour last longer.

1. Use Colour-Safe, Sulfate-Free Shampoo

The first rule of colour care: avoid harsh shampoos. Sulfates can strip away colour and natural oils, leaving hair dry and dull. Switch to a colour-safe, sulfate-free shampoo designed specifically for dyed hair. These formulas gently cleanse while locking in colour pigments.

2. Wash Less Frequently

Frequent washing can cause your hair colour to fade faster. Try to limit shampooing to 2–3 times a week, and use dry shampoo in between washes to keep your scalp feeling fresh. When you do wash, use cool or lukewarm water. Hot water opens the cuticle and allows colour to escape.

3. Deep Condition Weekly

Colored hair needs extra hydration. Use a deep conditioning mask once a week to replenish moisture, repair damage, and boost shine. Look for products with ingredients like keratin, argan oil, or shea butter to nourish and protect your strands.

4. Protect Hair From Heat Styling

Heat tools like straighteners and curling irons can dull colour and weaken hair. Always use a heat protectant spray before styling, and keep temperatures moderate. For everyday styling, try heatless alternatives like braiding or air-drying.

5. Limit Sun and Chlorine Exposure

UV rays and chlorine can fade colour quickly. When heading outdoors, wear a hat or use UV-protectant hair products. If you’re swimming in a pool, rinse your hair with fresh water beforehand and use a leave-in conditioner to create a barrier.

6. Get Regular Gloss or Toner Treatments

To maintain your colour’s intensity, consider visiting your salon for a gloss or toner treatment every four to six weeks. These quick services refresh faded colour, add shine, and enhance overall tone.

Don’t forget, healthy hair holds colour better. A good diet, proper hydration, and regular trims will go a long way in keeping your colour looking its best.
