Could your laptop bag be causing neck pain? Experts share tips to carry workload without discomfort

The handbags that you carry every day are more than an accessory. It is everything that a person needs to go to work or dine out. Our handbags carry our basics, including wallets, cosmetics, laptops, snacks, gym clothes, water bottles, and more. But do you also struggle with neck pain due to a bulky bag, then find relief by switching to a lighter, ergonomically designed backpack?

A heavy backpack and long commute hours can lead to increased neck, shoulder, and back pain that interferes with daily routine. A person can struggle to do their daily activities with ease and have to take leaves from work very often.

Carrying a laptop bag for a long time can strain the muscles and joints, leading to discomfort and long-term issues such as neck pain. “The weight of a laptop, combined with improper positioning, can lead to shoulder, neck, and back pain if one carries weight on one shoulder. There can be other issues such as tendonitis, muscle fatigue, and even nerve compression. It is essential to evenly distribute the weight on both shoulders and opt for an ergonomically designed backpack after consulting the doctor,” explains Dr. Girish L. Bhalerao, Super Speciality Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospital Mira Road.

The strain of the laptop bag

It is essential to seek timely attention in case of neck, shoulder, and back pain. “The back should have padded shoulder straps and back panels for comfort and support, reducing friction and pressure on the neck and shoulders. Don’t overload the bag,” adds Dr. Bhalerao.

Carrying your workload doesn’t have to come at the cost of your back or neck pain. One can experience back and neck pain due to poor posture or the pressure of carrying heavy bags over one shoulder. According to Dr. Anup Khatri, Senior Consultant- Orthopaedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, “When one tends to carry a laptop or work items in a bag that’s too heavy or improperly worn, there will be an uneven weight distribution, leading to muscle tension and discomfort, and as time passes, there can be chronic neck pain that will interfere with one’s ability to do the daily activities with ease.” Hence, there can be unbearable pain and nerve compression.

Tips to carry your workload without neck pain

  • Ensure to use a backpack with well-padded straps to be able to equally distribute the weight across both shoulders and reduce the load on your back and neck.
  • Avoid straining just on one shoulder, as doing so can increase the pressure on the spine.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain good neck posture.
  • Do light neck and back stretches to avoid pain.
  • Be attentive when it comes to your spine health.
